Indoor sessions are now finished until September. Booking now open for September classes.

September Sessions

Monday 10:00 - 11:00

This is a fairly gentle class, open to beginners and suitable for most Over 50's.

The class will include basic principles of Tai Chi and Gigong and will be focussing on the Sun style 13 move introductory form.

Note if you are a beginner and have not tried my classes before, that you dont need to commit to a full term before you have tried a session.

The cost works out at only £5 session if you pay in advance for a term or £6 session paying for a half-term. A single session rate is only available by arrangement if there are spaces in the class.

Monday 11:15 - 12:15                                                            This class is focussed on an intermediate level Sun Style 38 form which builds on both Tai Chi for Arthritis and Sun style 13 and is suitable for anyone who has done some Tai Chi before. The class started on Sun 38 in January but will be accepting people from beginner class in September, so there will be quite a lot of revision. The class also includes various Qigong.

Over 50's Classes usually at Age Concern Tameside                             131 Katherine St, Ashton-U-Lyne

We are currently meeting at the Methodist Hall in Stamford Street AUL until further notice.  NB. The entrance to the hall is right next to the building which used to be the methodist church and is now covered in scaffolding.

SEPTEMBER                                                                             It is not yet clear what accommodation Age Concern will be able to offer in September. If we are able to move back to Katherine street then we may once again have a Tuesday 9.45 beginners class as well as a 10.45 ongoing class.

In the meantime on September 7th we will meet again as one class at 10.30am - at the Methodist Hall. Hopefully by then more information will be available regarding Age Concern rooms and we will be able to review the class size and location.

The beginners class includes principles of Tai Chi with a focus on Sun style, and  this year will probably include the Sun style 13 introductory form (rather than Tai chi for Arthritis as previously). New Beginners can join at any point if there is room, but will find it easier starting at the beginning of a term and the class may get full if the space is limited. Contact Terri for up to date details.

The Ongoing Class at 10.45 is a Mixed level class which has previously included revision of "Tai Chi for Arthritis" Part 2 and Sun Style 13 introductory form together with Taiji Qigong "Shibashi" sets 1 and 2. In September the class will be moving on to the Sun style 38 form. This class will be open to those who have done some Tai Chi before. Please ring Terri if you wish to join this class.

What kind of Tai Chi is this... Is it for me?

The Over 50's classes often start with a short Tai Chi form (sequence of moves)called “Tai Chi for Arthritis” (TCA) devised by Australian physician Dr Paul Lam. This is a modern form modified slightly from the movements of traditional Sun style Tai Chi. In addition, I include elements of Qigong - gentle exercises which include a focus on breathing and relaxation.

It is not necessary to have arthritis to enjoy the class as the TCA form provides an easy introduction to Sun Style Tai Chi. It is also possible to buy Paul Lams DVD to use at home, and many complete beginners find it very easy to follow. While the beginners classes are most suitable for those who are either complete beginners in Tai Chi, do not have high levels of fitness or flexibility, or who have difficulty remembering sequences of movements, others come because they enjoy the relaxation element of the class. All students are encouraged to work within their own range of movement. Clothing should be loose and comfortable, with flat comfortable shoes or trainers.

Sun Style Tai Chi - 13 Move Introductory form and 38 Move Intermediate form  focus more on the traditional elements of Sun Style Tai Chi. The 38 move form also offers a good progression from Tai Chi for Arthritis as it will present new challenges while retaining some familiarity. Either of these forms would make a good introduction to Sun style Tai Chi if you have done some Tai Chi from another style, and would also be suitable for more active and confident beginners.
