Circle Dance - What is it?

Circle dance is a community activity for all ages where partners are not required and where individuals feel very quickly part of the circle, making it a very sociable event as well as good exercise and fun. There is also a deeper element of finding ones own centre in the dance, while at the same time being aware of others in the group.

Dances are a combination of traditional international folk dances many from Eastern Europe, and more modern choreographed dances which have been set to some wonderful pieces of international music.

Dances are usually done in a circle linking hands or arms (there are several different ways of doing this) and sometimes hands free.  Sometimes we dance in an open circle ie horseshoe shaped, since many traditional dances from Greece, Brittany and Bulgaria for example are done this way. Some dances are done in short lines of four or five and a few are done in a circle with a partner.

Every dance is taught before it is danced so it is easy to rest if you need to. In an hour and a half session we can include 10 or 11 dances with a variety of speed, style and complexity. Most dances can be broken down into fairly simple basic steps and the program will be chosen depending on the abilities and preferences of the group.

Circle Dance is very inclusive, can be done by all ages and enjoyed by both men and women. It’s not necessary to have any experience of dance although a sense of rhythm is helpful, and as this is a community activity, awareness of others in the group is also important. In fact in general its more important to be aware of  your space in the group than to get the steps perfect.

Circle Dance Local News

NEW BRAMHALL GROUP

The new afternoon group in Bramhall  (Tuesdays 1.30 - 3.00pm) has started well with everyone finding it a very enjoyable hour and a half. This week I was asked if we could have a short break in the middle......Actually, anyone can take a break and sit out of a dance at any time, but I appreciate that no-one wanted to miss anything!.....So next week there may be a short official drink break. You can get water from the kitchen but in warm weather it might be a good idea to bring a drink with you.

We are still looking for lots more people to come along and try this activity. The bigger the circle the greater the range of dances that can be included. Most people are beginners so dont worry if you havent done anything like this before. Its a drop-in class, you don't have to join or pay in advance, and you dont have to come every week... but you'll probably want to! Weekly sessions will run until Jul 22nd before a summer break (although I am open to booking one or two dates in the summer if enough are interested).

NEW CD

Local teacher Helen O has produced a CD of Greek dances with musician Bob Minney. Ask your local teacher where to get this, or phone Helen direct 07981 550534. Please mention this site.
